TAMILNADU VETERINARY AND ANIMAL SCIENCES UNIVERSITY (TANUVAS)

The seeds for TANUVAS were sown as early as 1876, when Madras Veterinary College was started as an Agricultural School in Chennai to offer diploma and certificate course in the field of veterinary and animal sciences. The institute attained the status of a college in the year 1903 (01.10.1903).

Although the college was the fourth veterinary institution to be started in India, it was the first veterinary college in the country to be affiliated to a university, the University of Madras in 1935 and the Bachelor of Veterinary Science (B.V.Sc.) degree course was started in 1936. The University of Madras also recognized the college as a centre for postgraduate education. In 1969, the college was brought under the Directorate of Veterinary Education and Research. The college was then academically affiliated to Tamilnadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in 1974. The Government of Tamilnadu established the first veterinary and animal sciences university in Asia on 20th September 1989 with its head quarters at Chennai with the name Tamilnadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (popularly abbreviated as TANUVAS).

TANUVAS is an autonomous institution governed by its Board of Management which regulates the policies of the university in accordance with the provision of act and statutes. TANUVAS had standardized basic stem cell technology for isolation and characterization of adult and embryonic stem cells and is pioneer in evolving Veterinary Regenerative Medicine clinical research protocol for the management of spinal cord injuries and osteoarthritis in canines.

VIRGINIA TECH

VIRGINIA – MARYLAND REGIONAL COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE

Founded by the Virginia General Assembly in 1978, the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine is a regional professional school built upon the strong foundations of two of the nation's leading land-grant universities: Virginia Tech in Blacksburg and the University of Maryland at College Park. The College operates three campuses, including the main campus installation at Virginia Tech, the Avrum Gudelsky Veterinary Center at College Park, and the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg.

One of 28 colleges of veterinary medicine in the United States, the VMRCVM offers comprehensive educational programs, provides advanced clinical care for clients throughout the region, and conducts a variety of animal and biomedical research programs. Veterinary medicine remains a vital part of animal agriculture, and that role is magnified by the growing demands of a global population explosion. But modern veterinary medicine is also very concerned with the health and welfare of companion animals. Today, the health or illness of a beloved pet is a critical family concern.

Veterinary medicine today is one of the broadest biomedical disciplines, encompassing the entire spectrum of medical activities from the molecular level to entire ecosystems. It is a profession vibrant with change and opportunity. Today, veterinarians are legislators, federal and state agency directors, corporate executives, research scientists, teachers, public health officers, agricultural production consultants, university presidents, and of course, the gentle doctor who takes care of your pet.
